Do I actually need a website for my construction business?

For contractors in Victoria BC and Vancouver Island

You've been running your business for years without a website. Word of mouth keeps the phone ringing. Referrals come in. Life is good.

So why does everyone keep telling you that you need a website?

Here's the honest answer: it depends.

When you DON'T need a website

If you're booked solid for the next 6 months and turning away work, you probably don't need a website. You've got more leads than you can handle. A website won't help you do more jobs - you're already maxed out.

If all your work comes from a few loyal general contractors who keep you busy, you might not need one either. Your relationships are your marketing.

When you DO need a website

Here's where things change:

The real question

It's not "do I need a website?" It's "am I losing jobs because I don't have one?"

If a homeowner in Victoria is looking for a roofer, they're probably going to Google "roofer Victoria BC." If you're not there, you don't exist to them.

That homeowner might be a $15,000 job. Multiply that by all the people who searched, couldn't find you, and called someone else. That's the real cost of not having a website.

Think about it this way: One job from your website pays for the entire thing. Everything after that is extra money you wouldn't have had.

What about Facebook and Google Business?

These are good. You should have them. But they're not the same as a website.

A Google Business profile is basically a digital business card. People can find your number and see some reviews. That's useful.

But a website lets you:

Facebook and Google Business support your website. They don't replace it.

The bottom line

If you're happy with your current workload and don't want to grow, you can probably skip the website.

But if you want more work, better jobs, or to stop losing business to competitors who look more professional online - yeah, you need a website.

It doesn't have to be fancy. It doesn't have to cost a fortune. It just has to exist, look decent, and make it easy for people to contact you.
